Screen capture blanking and screenshot detection On iPhone, screenshots, screen recordings and AirPlay mirroring of the app always save a black image, and there is no setting to turn it off. Screenshots are also detected and the other party is notified. Recordings are blanked but not reported. In a web browser, screen capture cannot be blocked.

What Makes theSHFT Different

Every encrypted messenger solves the same problem: encrypting message content. None of them solve exposure. If someone takes your phone and opens any encrypted messenger, they see it immediately. They see contacts, conversations, timestamps. Encryption doesn't help when someone is standing over your shoulder.

theSHFT solves exposure. PIN lock keeps everything sealed. A Duress PIN (Pro) wipes it all instantly and deletes your account. Messages disappear on a timer. Voice and video calls are fully encrypted. Group chats use Sender Key encryption for up to 100 members. Contact gating means nobody reaches you without approval. There is nothing to find. Built for DV survivors, journalists, activists, and anyone who takes privacy seriously.

The Founder

Willie Austin

Willie Austin is the founder and sole developer of theSHFT, an encrypted messenger on the App Store. He is from Selma, Alabama, and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Troy University.

Before software he made clothes and paintings. Jayson Tatum wore his Willie Austin label, and his portraits hang at Troy University, including Representative John R. Lewis in John Robert Lewis Hall and the late Trustee Lamar P. Higgins at the Rosa Parks Museum. The full story is at willieaustin.com.

He wrote the first line of theSHFT in December 2025 and shipped it to the App Store three months later, in March 2026, working alone. He has shipped every update since on his own.

The app is built around the half of privacy most apps skip. Encrypting a message is the solved part. What is left over, years of history sitting on a server waiting for a subpoena or a breach, is the part he set out to fix. Messages delete from both devices and from the server on a timer, screenshots come out black, and notifications never carry any content.

There is no company behind it and no outside funding. He writes the code, ships the builds and answers the support email himself.
